Hybrid and Electric Vehicles

With the recent strive for greater fuel economy and lower emissions, hybrid and electric vehicles have been increasing in popularity. This means more of these types of vehicles have been showing up in repair facilities. The types of systems used can vary, but they all share one thing in common, High Voltage DC Power Systems.

Categories of High Voltage Vehicles

Electric Vehicle (EV) Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV)

A vehicle powered solely by energy stored in a type of battery, or batteries. An EV/BEV is not a hybrid vehicle. Example:All  Tesla Models

Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV)

These are electric vehicles equipped with an electrical generator, usually a small internal combustion engine. This small engine is used solely to provide electricity, not to propel the vehicle. Example: Chevrolet Volt

Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)

These are vehicles powered by two or more energy sources and energy convertors, one of which is electricity. These types of hybrids may include "micro-hybrid" vehicles with stop/start systems.

Hybrid example:2015 Toyota Prius

Micro Hybrid:2017  Ford F-150

Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)

These vehicles can charge their batteries from an external source, like electric vehicles.

Example: 2017 Hyundai Sonata PHEV

Why Columbia Dent Company?

At Columbia Dent Company, we care about your safety and the safety of our technicians. That is why we have invested the time and money into getting the proper training and safety equipment to properly power down hybrid and electric vehicles to render them safe to work on.
Some of these vehicles carry a charge of 200V DC! That means if a technician were to accidentally make contact with the high voltage wiring with a tool, they would be locked on by the high voltage, and would most certainly die.
It is important to know where these lines are located, and understand how to avoid damaging the vehicle, or electric shock.
You can rest assured, we have the knowledge and training to safely work on your hybrid or electric vehicle without causing damage to your vehicle or harm to ourselves.
